Workplace Violence

Violence is a major factor in injury and death in the workplace. This paper will describe the risk factors and prevention strategies for workplace violence. Each week an average of 20 people are murdered and 18,000 injured at work. The definition of workplace violence is violent acts, including physical assults and threats of assult, directed toward persons at work or on duty.

Risk factors for workplace violence are: contact with the public; exchange of money; delivery of passengers, goods, or services; having a mobile workplace, like a taxicab; working with unstable people in health care, social service, or criminal justice settings; working alone; working late at night; working in high crime areas; or guarding valuable property. Circumstances contributing to workplace violence include: robbery; disgruntled clients, customers, patients, or inmates; violence by coworkers, employees, or employers; and domestic violence that enters the workplace. People use the term "going postal" to describe workplace violence and that's not fair to postal workers.

Workplace violence can be prevented by environmental designs, administrative controls, and behavioral strategies. Environmental designs include changing cash handling policies, physical separation from customers, better lighting, security devices, and personal protective equipment. Behavioral strategies include conflict resolution and training employees to make nonviolent responses.

"I think my paper is well organized, but I forgot to mention administrative controls in my last paragraph. I also need a sentence at the end to wrap up the ideas of the paper."

"In the first paragraph, I think the second sentence should be put at the end because it tells what I'm going to cover in my paper. The last sentence of the second paragraph doesn't belong. It's not related to the other ideas and it gives my opinion. I will drop that sentence."

T ake the time to re-write.
"I will make these changes in my paper. I will move the second sentence in the first paragraph. Then I will expand my last idea to describe administrative controls and include a wrap up sentence. I will also drop the sentence about going postal."

Workplace violence can be prevented by environmental designs, administrative controls, and behavioral strategies. Environmental designs include changing cash handling policies, physical separation from customers, better lighting, security devices, and personal protective equipment. Administrative controls might be changes in staffing plans and work practices (e.g., escorting patients or use of security guards). Behavioral strategies include conflict resolution and training employees to make nonviolent responses. These three prevention strategies will not totally solve the problem of workplace violence, but they should reduce the number of deaths and injuries in the workplace.
