NETS*T Standard II: Planning and Designing Learning Environments and Experiences

Rubric II.B elaborated:
Teachers apply research on teaching and learning with technology when planning learning environments and experiences.

Following must be included to achieve “meets” on all criteria.

One formal research study or literature review citation on teaching and learning with technology
One lesson plan that demonstrates implementation of cited study or review

Criterion Meets

Review research

Cites and reflects on formal research study or literature review on best practices when teaching and learning with technology

Key Words and Phrases to Include and Address in Reflections:
1. Formal research study a study that incorporates a conventional research design to test a hypothesis with validated measures
2. Literature review surveys scholarly sources (e.g. articles, books, dissertations, conference proceedings) relevant to a particular issue, providing a description, summary, and critical evaluation of each work. The purpose is to offer an overview of significant literature published on a topic.

Tips
1.

Identify a formal research study or literature review that suggests an effective strategy, technique, or approach to teaching and learning with technology. The study should be submitted as an artifact (e.g. in PDF format or via URL.) Be sure to cite an actual formal research study or literature review as opposed to an article that may have been written based on anecdotal evidence or experience. CARET (Center for Applied Research in Educational Technology), for example, may be a place to begin to look for studies conducted in this field.

2.

Reflections should describe briefly the hypothesis and subsequent findings of the study or review.

Examples of content for reflection:

1.

Artifact: “A Report on the Effect of the United Streaming(TM) Application on Educational Performance”

Boster, F. J., Meyer, G. S., Roberto, A. J., & Inge, C. C. (2002). A report on the effect of the Unitedstreaming(TM) application on educational performance. Cometrika, Inc., Baseline Research, LLC., & Longwood University.

Reflection: This study showed the positive effects of using video clips correlated to the  Virginia SOLs as part of content-based lessons. Hypothesis was made then subsequently proven that students who were presented the clips as a part of lessons scored higher on post-tests than those whose teachers did not use video.

Plan to apply research

Develops plan to apply cited research in a learning activity

Tips
1. Submit a lesson plan that demonstrates implementation of the research cited.
2.

Reflections should identify the lesson components that demonstrate application of the research.

Examples of content for reflection:

Artifact: Jamestown lesson plan

Reflection:

This lesson utilizes the video clip,  Jamestown: Settling the New World 5a clip (2min.) 5b clip (2min.)

Attending sessions at various state and local technology conferences has enriched me with the latest research in the area of best practices for technology integration. This lesson is an example of how I applied the concept of incorporating video into a lesson then further applying a particular technique to focus them properly on the video. By not just popping in a video and watching it in its entirety but instead giving questions to the students before, during, and after the video, the students' level of comprehension and retention of the material greatly increased. By incorporating video into this particular lesson this year, I find that interest and enthusiasm in the topic is higher than in previous years. Performance on assessments is as good or better as a result, too.
