NETS*T Standard II: Planning and Designing Learning Environments and Experiences

Rubric II.C elaborated:
Teachers identify and locate technology resources and evaluate them for accuracy and suitability
.

Following must be included to achieve “meets” on all criteria.

A list of hardware resources available for use along with brief, general descriptions of plans for implementation.
A list of software resources available and appropriate for use in instructional activities with brief, general descriptions of ways resources are planned for use.
At least three different online resources used in instructional activities.
Specific criteria used for evaluation of online resources used by students

Criterion Meets

Inventory appropriate technology resources

Hardware and software resources are inventoried and are appropriate for instructional activities.

Key Words and Phrases to Include and Address in Reflections:
1. Hardware equipment (e.g. computers, laptops, printers, scanners, cameras, digital projectors, white boards, document cameras, hand-helds)
2. Software computer programs (e.g. word processing, spreadsheets, databases, instructional programs, image editing, video production, Internet browsers, page layout, web editors, e-mail, gradebooks)
3. Inventoried itemized (list of hardware and software resources including their availability)
4. Appropriate most suitable; fitting developmentally

Tips
1.

It is important to know what technology resources are available to you, both within your school and within your division. Furthermore, it is necessary to identify what available tools best serve your instructional needs. Inventory the resources that are suitable and planned for use in your classroom. All available resources need not be listed but include those that are among the most appropriate and valuable tools for your use.

2. Reflections should give a brief overview of plans for how these resources are best implemented. You may want to combine both artifact and reflection into one as shown below.

Examples of content for reflection:

1.

(hardware excerpts):

Mobile laptop and projector
. This is available for checkout from the library. This tool is appropriate for full class discussions involving demonstrating skills, previewing lab activities, SOL review, lessons using online textbook activities, SMARTBoard activities, displaying websites, lessons using streaming video. This lists shows just a few ways to use this tool but there are an infinite number of ways to use a laptop and projector in my classroom.

SMARTBoard. Our team shares this piece of equipment. I routinely use the SMARTBoard with word study sorts, interactive Powerpoint games such as Jeopardy, math skill review, online SOL practice, and many other ways that include student interaction.

(software excerpts)

Portaportal. (http://www.portaportal.com) This is one of the most valuable online tools I have ever used. It allows me to create sets of bookmarks appropriate for student use. Students use these sites as parts of lessons and many access the site at home for review and extension activities.

Powerpoint. This is installed on every computer in the building. I create Powerpoint games (Jeopardy, Millionaire, for example) for SOL review and also incorporate United Streaming videos into presentations for students. Students complete two Powerpoint projects throughout the year.

Ultrakey (typing program). This is installed in my lab. Students complete a six-week unit at the beginning of the year using this program in order to learn and further develop their typing skills.

Criterion Meets

Locate and evaluate online resources

Locates online resources. Evaluation of these resources demonstrates critical analysis of their suitability for appropriate student use.

Key Words and Phrases to Include and Address in Reflections:
1. Online web-based (e.g. web sites for research, instruction, reinforcement, resource, productivity)
2. Critical analysis careful systematic evaluation; clear criteria established

Tips
1. Identify at least three online resources used in instructional activities. You could provide specific websites in the context of a lesson or identify a collection of resources at a site.
2. Reflections should discuss the factors involved in the decision to use a particular online resource as a part of an instructional activity.

Examples of content for reflection:

1.

List of three web sites used in student research paper assignment. Reflection cites a specific online document used in critiquing sites and notes such factors as accuracy, appropriate reading level, easy navigation, and good organization as critical issues when selecting these sites for student use.
2. Link to teacher-created Portaportal site. Reflection cites Kathy Schrock’s online website evaluation site for elementary schools and indicates that links selected for Portaportal site meet the criteria established in this document, further noting the few specific criteria that are most critical in making the decision to use with students.
