Preparing for the Journey

So the decision was made.

First I needed a game plan. I needed to establish some timelines and set some goals and deadlines or completing the process would remain an item on my task list– never to be checked off.

I also established a cheering squad to keep me focused when the inevitable “why am I doing this” wailing began.

I am fortunate to have colleagues where I work who supported me through the process and celebrated with me when I successfully completed each rubric.

Find your own support group from family, friends or coworkers. They will help you to keep your “eye on the prize”.

I learned early in the process to pay attention to the details of the rubrics. Words like consistently and over time are important and indicate the type of artifacts that you will need to demonstrate your proficiency.

I recommend looking at the rubrics with a highlighter in hand. Also, pay attention to areas of the rubrics that are highlighted for you.

This highlighting was not a feature in the early rubrics and its addition will be invaluable to you as you go through the certification process.

Set deadlines and keep them. I made this process part of my work plan and it became a part of my evaluation. What I didn’t do was set benchmarks along the way.

So two weeks before my evaluation, I realized that I had to get this process completed. Trust me– two weeks is not enough time if you want to retain your sanity!

Finally, if you can work with a group so that you are all going the process at the same time, you will find the journey a lot easier.

I did not have this option, but I know that if I had worked with a group, I could have shown my artifacts to others before submitting them to get input.

Sharing ideas and reading the rubrics through the eyes of someone else can be a big help in determining what you need to submit and how to approach rubrics that you may be having some difficulty with.
