Reflection

I completed the Computer Application certificate program through UVA.  This program consisted of 6 one credit-hour classes designed to teach various aspects of technology and to examine how it could be used in the classroom.  We covered topics such as word processing, spreadsheets, electronic resources, and web pages.

Look Out, Michael Jordan Lesson Plan

Description

Reflection

I recognized early the value of technology in meeting students’ needs and providing for a learner-centered environment and sought out new technologies to implement in my classroom.  I did understand, however, the importance of assessing the value of these tools and using them only when appropriate.  There are times when technology is not the best approach, so I strove to provide a variety of learning experiences for my students.  In the lesson, Look Out Michael Jordan, Here Comes… I used technology for several purposes.  First, video was used interactively to provide content and engage the students.  The Internet is used by the students to locate information from a given website.  An alternate source of the information is noted in case the Internet is not available.   A spreadsheet is used to collect and analyze data.  The focus is on the use of the spreadsheet as a tool, so I opted to have one spreadsheet that is displayed for the class that all groups can enter their data.  This is less time consuming than having each student create and enter their own data and students can easily see the results when the data is graphed.

Professional Development Plan

Reflection

I have identified both long-term and short-term goals that help keep me focused as I learn about technology.  As I attend conferences and workshops, I always consider my goals as I select sessions.  Also, I frequently make use of online resources, such as Atomic Learning, that lets me learn at my own pace and when it suits me.
