NETS*T Standard IV:  Assessment and Evaluation

Rubric IV.B elaborated:
Teachers use technology resources to collect and analyze data, interpret results, and communicate findings to improve instructional practice and maximize student learning.

Following must be included to achieve “meets” on all criteria.

Artifacts that show consistent use of technology to do each of the following:  collect, analyze, and report student performance data.  Reflections describe how the technology tools used are more efficient and effective than traditional tools.  Note – one tool may do all of the above.
One or more examples of how technology enhanced data analysis helps you make decisions that improve your instruction.

Criterion Meets

Use technology resources to collect data

Technology is consistently used to collect student performance data in more efficient and effective ways than traditional means of data collection.

Key Words and Phrases to Include and Address in Reflections:
1. Consistently – on a frequent basis over time
2. Collectgather, input
3. More efficient and effective how do the technology tools make the job of collecting data faster and/or more accurate than traditional means?

Tips
1. The word “consistently” is used throughout this rubric.  All artifacts and reflections submitted should show how technology tools are used regularly to collect student performance data.  An explanation should be given explaining how the technology tool makes data collection faster and/or more accurate.

Examples of content for reflection:

1.

Multiple choice bubble sheets are used to record student answers to a classroom assessment.  The documents are scored by a test scoring machine.  An item analysis and class average is provided to the teacher.  By collecting student assessment data using technology, a teacher saves time scoring and analyzing student scores.
2. Palm devices are used to collect performance data on the PALS assessment.  The data is then downloaded to the PALS website for scoring and analysis.  Collection of the data is faster with the palm versus recording the data by hand on a form.  The data is transmitted with an infrared device to the computer and PALS website alleviating the time consuming task of keying in the data.
3. Online assessments are used to determine student mastery of content.  These assessments may come from the State, they may be developed in house, or they may be part of an online service.  Student answers are collected as the assessment in being administered.  Typically, the assessment is scored immediately after it is finished, providing the teacher with timely and accurate data by which to make instructional decisions.

Criterion Meets

Use technology resources to analyze data

Technology is consistently used to analyze student performance data in more efficient and effective ways than traditional means of data analysis.

Key Words and Phrases to Include and Address in Reflections:
1. Analyzea detailed examination of student performance data

Tips
1. Artifacts and narratives should explain how a variety of technology tools are consistently used to examine student performance data.  An explanation should be given explaining how the technology tool makes the examination more efficient and effective than traditional methods of analysis.

Examples of content for reflection:

1.

An electronic grade book or spreadsheet is used to record student performance data.  Different graphs and sorts are created to analyze student performance.  Class averages, missing assignment lists, and individual student performance reports may also be used as examples of how these tools help you to review student performance and make instructional decisions.
2. A test scoring machine, in conjunction with multiple choice student answer documents, may be used in the classroom to score student assessments and provide the teacher with an item analysis.  The teacher may then use the item analysis to determine which concepts may need additional instructional time.
3. Many schools and classroom teachers use statistical software packages to disaggregate student performance data based on demographic indicators.  Data is grouped in a variety of ways to help teachers pinpoint weaknesses among particular subgroups.  The students in these subgroups may then receive additional instruction in a tutoring period.

Criterion Meets

Use technology resources to communicate findings

Technology is consistently used to communicate student performance data in more efficient and effective ways than traditional means of communicating performance data.

Key Words and Phrases to Include and Address in Reflections:
1. Communicate inform

Tips
1. Artifacts and reflections submitted should describe how technology makes communicating student performance data more efficient and effective than traditional means.

Examples of content for reflection:

1.

A classroom web page is used to post individual or class performance data.  The URL for the classroom web page is submitted.
2. An electronic grade book is used to provide progress reports that are more detailed and informative than traditional progress reports in which only the mid point average was reported.  A sample progress report is submitted.
3. A reflection is submitted on how presentation software is used in your building or school to present performance data such as Standards of Learning assessment results.  Included is a description of how the software and accompanying graphs help you understand the results and how your school is accredited or not accredited based upon the results.
4. A reflection is submitted describing how email assists you in communicating student performance data to parents.  Include an example email.

Criterion Meets

Use data to improve instruction

Analysis of data collected using technology is consistently used to make decisions that do one or more of the following:
-Improve the quality of learning and instruction
-Improve the quantity of learning and instruction
-Reduce the time required for learning and instruction and to accomplish tasks

Key Words and Phrases to Include and Address in Reflections:
1. Analysisdata is manipulated in some way to provide meaningful results
2. Make decisionshow is your data analysis used to make/change instructional decisions

Tips
1. Reflections should describe how the analysis of student performance data is helping you to improve the quality and/or quantity of your instruction.  Note how the information you receive from the analysis is changing your teaching, your choice of resources, your pacing, etc.  Describe how technology makes accomplishing tasks faster and more efficient; therefore, leaving you more time for instruction.

Examples of content for reflection:

1.

An item analysis (the number of students marking each answer of a multiple choice assessment) of a cumulative assessment quickly identifies those concepts that need review.  By spending more time on the concepts in which students demonstrated lesser understanding, and less time on those that have been mastered, you are making better use of your instructional time.  Submit an item analysis and describe the process you use to interpret it and how it affects your instruction.
2. Test scoring machines and online assessments quickly score student tests leaving you more time for instruction.  Describe how technology has made administrative tasks easier and more efficient, and how this has affected your time management in the classroom.
