Karen Campbell is first fully NETS*T certified teacher for SVTC

"Rigorous, but worth it,"
she says

On October 14, 2003, Karen Campbell of Harrisonburg City Schools became the first teacher in the SVTC to be fully certified on the National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS*T).  These NETS*T standards, published by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), are the basis on which teachers' ability to use technology to enhance teaching and learning are judged nationwide.

Integrating technology into the classroom has been one of her trademark techniques as a teacher. In 1994, Karen became a Master Teacher for the National Teacher Training Institute and has been a regular at Institutes ever since. After teaching science for 17 years, Karen spent four years as a Technology Resource Teacher for Page County Schools.  She was named Page County Teacher of the Year in 1996.

Karen currently chairs the Shenandoah Valley Technology Consortium, an organization founded in 1995 to provide educational technology leadership to the schools in the Shenandoah Valley.

Karen lives in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, where she has been an educator for over 20 years.  As the Instructional Technology Coordinator for Harrisonburg City Schools, Karen works with teachers to help them integrate technology into their classes.  She believes that students must be actively engaged in learning and advocates a creative approach to teaching, involving hands-on activities, collaboration, and technology.

Karen received her B.S. degree at James Madison University and plans to complete her Masters in Educational Technology from JMU in December 2003.
