[Editor: Faye shows how audio can transform a plain PowerPoint presentation into useful instructional content for teaching foreign language.  Her presentation addresses pronunciation of French terms; without audio, the presentation would be much less effective.]

Technology is a very important component of learning a foreign language....  I took a week-long digital storytelling class this summer through Blue Ridge Community College... and received a digital camera to use with students plus Roxio Easy Media Creator for a classroom computer.  This fall I [am] teaching French I to 8th grade students....  This is an introductory presentation for these students and will also serve as a model for them to create their own presentations.  I think it will be great fun and I am excited about using it with students.

Postscript (Nov. 12, 2004):  I did use my French Noun Genre Roxio Easy Media Creator production as a teaching device on the first day of school this fall in one of Shelburne's presentation computer labs.  I showed it again a few days later to model the type of production the French students could create.  I showed them my two-page story board as an example of how I developed the presentation.

The French students each created a story board of 12 planned photos.  After the story board was approved, each student borrowed the classroom digital camera and took pictures based on the story board.  Then the photos were imported to our classroom computer and saved to our French file on the school network server.  The students are able to access these photos from Shelburne's Digital Media Lab and are currently in the process of editing them and adding French text to the photos for their production.
